Out Front: Dan Simons Spearheads Sustainable Coalition

Out in front of topics he’s passionate about is where we usually find our very own Dan Simons.

Inspired to combat the fact that: We use 500 million straws per day in the U.S. (yes, 500 million!), Dan recently launched Our Last Straw.

“It is up to all of us in the hospitality industry to do our part,” says Dan. “There are major movements happening across the globe to address plastic pollution. As restaurateurs, we need to join together and lead the charge for change in our country’s capital. We can make a serious impact by starting with plastic straws, and creating a platform from which we can attack the giant, offensive plastic tsunami. Humans created the problem. Humans can solve the problem. Plastic isn’t an enemy, it’s human behavior and education that is the real target.”

Vowing to be an advocate for change and leave behind a better planet for our children, Dan created Our Last Straw as a means to collaborate with a coalition of Washington, D.C. area restaurants, bars, cafes, hotels, and event venues on the shared mission to eliminate plastic drinking straws due to their harmful impact on our environment.

The Mission:

  • Replace plastic straws with biodegradable paper straws, eco friendly straws, sustainable straws or no straw at all.
  • Work with local government leaders, in DC and beyond, to ban plastic straws.
  • Help educate guests, and the public, about the hazards of plastic straws and single-use plastics and the benefit of biodegradable straws.
  • Work to eliminate the use of plastic straws.

We invite you to take action. Help Dan and Our Last Straw eliminate the use of plastic straws across the DC area and beyond. We urge you to make a personal pledge to #StopSucking and say no to the plastic straw.
