As March continues, there are great opportunities to celebrate National Nutrition Month® and National Agriculture Day on March 19, 2013. The VSAG team thought it opportune to illustrate the importance of these initiatives.
Initially created as a weeklong event in 1973, National Nutrition Month expanded in 1980 as public interest in nutrition grew. And today, the goal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics remains the same: Focusing national attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating habits. National Agriculture Day was also founded in 1973 by the Agriculture Council of America to increase awareness of and recognize agriculture’s vital role in our society, and our everyday lives.
As our team at VSAG navigates through the ever changing and ever growing restaurant industry, one mantra remains the same for us: Restaurants that offer guests fresh, flavorful and nutritional fare will inspire healthy eating habits and good food choices.
And this month is a good a time as any to up your restaurant’s nutrition ante.
Incorporating in-house healthy initiatives is a great way to support the nutritional cause. So, whether it be regularly highlighting/introducing fresh fruits/vegetables on your menu, funding the planting of a fruit/vegetable garden at an area school, inviting loyal guests to participate in a healthy food recipe contest and featuring the winning dish on a specials menu or donating time and/or money to a local food bank that focuses on serving healthy meals … Keeping the nutritional benefits of ingredients on the forefront when planning menus or special events is a great way to inspire guests and give back.
