We are thrilled to announce the opening of Mama Rouge, a new Southeastern Asian Bistro concept at the beautiful Washington Harbour on Washington, D.C.’s Georgetown Waterfront.
Mama Rouge is the third restaurant from our esteemed clients, Chef/Owner Aulie Bunyarataphan and her husband and partner, Mel Oursinsiri. The pair also owns and operates two additional regional restaurants, T.H.A.I in Shirlington, VA and Tom Yum District in Rosslyn, VA.
When Aulie & Mel approached us to create this new 116 seat full service concept, which also includes a gorgeous 30 seat patio overlooking the Potomac River, we dove head first to develop the entire concept and brand as a distinctly Southeastern Asian bistro, with classic French accents and menu items.
Our culinary team worked with Chef Aulie to create the menus for lunch/dinner, brunch and dessert, and the bar. Additionally, we oversaw hiring and training, developed operational systems for efficiency, generated (and are overseeing) the marketing strategy and planning, and we’re handling management of the restaurant on a day to day basis.
We immediately connected to the feel, aura, and inspiration of the Mama Rouge concept, which pays homage to Aulie’s grandmother. As a child, Aulie spent countless hours by her grandmother’s side learning about their Thai family culinary traditions, cooking techniques, and much loved recipes. Many of these dishes are at the heart of the all new Mama Rouge menu, which features such popular Southeast Asian dishes as Pho, Noodles, BBQ, and Banh Mi, balanced by traditional French favorites of Steak au Poivre, Pommes Frites, and an amazing assortment of crepes, European style pastries, with cocktails, French wines, and an assortment of Thai teas and coffee drinks to delight.
The result is a unique dining experience with artfully prepared dishes and select beverages chosen to highlight the bright, exotic flavors and culinary influences of these two distinct, yet perfectly married cultures.
To pull the concept together we collaborated with the design team at Washington, D.C.-based firm Collective Architecture to develop Mama Rouge’s vibrant, textural, lush, and inviting interior design, heightened only by the soft, elegant ambient lighting which reflects beautifully off the hand-placed tin ceiling tiles and enhances the overall feel of the contemporary bistro setting.
Mama Rouge transports guests to another time, and another era, while remaining a modern and easily accessible dining spot in Washington, D.C. – a true journey to an exotic yet elegant feast for the senses.
