A Paradigm-shifting Story of a High-volume Concept, Where Operations & Menu Success Mix to Lead the Industry’s Farmer-owned Dining Category
Founding Farmers is a full-service, upscale-casual restaurant located in downtown Washington, D.C. Owned by North Dakota Farmers Union (NDFU), a collective of over 40,000 American family farmers, the seed for Founding Farmers was planted when NDFU reached out to us after we’d successfully turned around their waterfront restaurant, known as Agraria, into a more casual, sustainably-minded concept.
Our restaurant consulting team was hired to plan and execute all aspects of this project. From concept development and design to food & beverage management and menu concepts development to operational systems including hiring and training systems, as well as strategic public relations and marketing.
We worked closely with NDFU to effectively translate the philosophy and spirit of the concept into a functional, profitable, and unique restaurant brand. Starting from the ground up, we spearheaded concept development to create a streamlined vision for the restaurant as a whole, and provided full project management services during the planning and pre-opening stages.
On a practical level, our team managed all details of the pre-opening phase, including: branding, interiors, menu design, staffing, culinary organization, staff training, bar concepts development, media relations, and website design.
Following a highly successful opening in 2008, we developed a separate food & beverage operations company, Farmers Restaurant Group, for strategic management of the restaurant on behalf of NDFU, including oversight of day-to-day operations, hiring, training, and ongoing marketing and sales development.
